HAMPTON -- Virginia Marine Police said a 7-year-old boy was piloting a boat when it crashed, fatally injuring his mother.
Now police are asking the Hampton prosecutor to determine whether charges should be filed in connection with the deadly July 4 accident.
According to investigators, the boy was at the controls of the boat on the Hampton River when it struck a pier and threw the woman into the windshield and then off the back of the boat.
Elizabeth J. Elliott, 35, of Hampton, was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
John Bull of the Virginia Marine Resources Commission said Monday that the state has no age restrictions to operate a motorboat.
He said an autopsy revealed that Elliott died of severe head trauma.

At first I was blaming the dead mother for this accident since her 7 year old son should have never been driving the boat. But then I got to the bottom of the article and found out that there is no age requirement to operate a boat in the great state of Virginia. First off, who is running things in Virginia? Does every important politician just focus of Washington leaving Virginia to have ridiculous outdated laws? I bet this kid was legally drinking while driving this boat. Secondly, I really wish I grew up in Virginia. This little shooter mcgavin in training was probably driving towards the docks to pick up his girlfriends. God forbid this kid ever meets up with my boy Latarian Milton. Those two have the sea and ground covered before hitting double digits. Just two kids destined for greatness.
