BOGOTA, Colombia — Fans worldwide have fashioned replicas of the World Cup trophy out of everything from papier-mache to plastic. But a lawbreaker in Colombia gets top prize for most original material: cocaine.
Airports anti-drug chief Col. Jose Piedrahita says that Colombian authorities found the unusual statue during a routine security check by anti-drug agents Friday in a mail warehouse at Bogota’s international airport.
The 14-inch-high statue was inside a box headed for Madrid, Spain. The statue was painted gold with green stripes on the base.
Piedrahita said Saturday that laboratory tests confirmed the cup was made of 11 kilos (24 pounds) of cocaine mixed with acetone or gasoline to make it moldable.
Finally something interesting from the World Cup. As much as I love grown men randomly falling down and fake crying, 24 pounds of white shaped like the World Cup trophy is much more interesting. Was this a present to a major drug lord who loves soccer or just a guy trying to smuggle cocaine? If you were trying to smuggle 24 pounds of anything wouldn't you want to be as low profile as possible? I'm pretty sure the World Cup trophy in Colombia is the like the Stanley Cup here, when its around people take notice. I probably would have just hid it all in a box of dishwasher detergent. Seems like that would have a better success rate. Also, based on my value calculations which are based on Lil Wayne songs, this was nearly half a million dollars worth of Christina Aguilera. That's a whole bunch of white girl. Needless to say, an entire small village in Colombia will be executed for this mishap.
